Description from the seller
PONSON Aimé (1850-1924)
“The Grapevine Cluster”
Oil on board, signed bottom right,
Provenance: Family of the artist,
Beautiful, finely detailed work by the Marseille painter Aimé Ponson, depicting a still life of a hanging bunch of grapes with a sheet of newspaper, most likely “Le Provençal.”
This newspaper sheet even bears the headline of an article: “La grève des vignerons,” which certainly echoes the winegrowers’ strike in the Languedoc in 1907.
The artist gives special attention to the details of each grape and to the play of light.
A pupil of his brother, the painter Raphaël Ponson, Aimé exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1876 with historical subjects, still lifes, or scenes drawn from literature such as the Fables of La Fontaine.
He also actively participated in provincial exhibitions; Avignon, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence and Montpellier where his work was often awarded a medal.
From 1896, Aimé Ponson taught decorative art for young girls at the École des Beaux-Arts of Marseille.
His works are today held in several museums in France: Aix-en-Provence, Béziers, Digne, Carcassonne and Marseille.
Dimensions: 33 x 50 cm without frame and 52 x 69.5 cm with its original wooden frame.
