This object is a Knight Grand Cross plaque of the order Piano, the highest honor currently conferred by the Holy See.
Identification: It is an eight-pointed star in 925 silver, blue enamel, with a white central medallion.
Inscription: The medallion bears the golden inscription "PIVS IX" (Pius IX) and the motto "VIRTUTI ET MERITO" (By virtue and merit).
History: Established by Pope Pius IX on 17 June 1847, the order was originally linked to the conferment of personal nobility.
Dimensions: 9 cm
Weight: 78 g.
