THE ARTIST
Alexander Calder (1898–1976) was an American sculptor best known for inventing the mobile, a type of kinetic sculpture that moves with air currents. Born in Pennsylvania into a family of artists, he initially studied mechanical engineering, which later influenced his innovative approach to sculpture. Calder gained recognition in the 1930s for his abstract works made of wire and metal, combining movement, balance, and playful forms.
He was also the creator of “stabiles,” large-scale stationary sculptures often displayed in public spaces. Calder’s work bridged art and engineering, redefining sculpture as dynamic and interactive. He collaborated with leading artists such as Joan Miró and Marcel Duchamp, who famously coined the term “mobile.” His major achievements include transforming modern sculpture and becoming a key figure in 20th-century abstract art.
