Description from the seller

Refined pair of lacquered red and gold chairs

Italy / France, late 19th –
Napoleon III taste with references to Louis XVI

Fascinating period chairs with a strong dramatic impact, made between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, expression of late 19th-century decorative taste inspired by Napoleon III style with elegant references to Louis XVI.

The wooden frame is enriched by a vivid red lacquer finish, enhanced by refined gold detailing that outline the profiles, moldings, and turned elements. The slightly curved backrest, with double crossbars and columns adorned with small gold spheres, imparts dynamism and formal balance.

The turned legs, united by crossbars with a central spherical gold element, give stability and harmony to the composition.

The contrast between the intense red and gold creates a refined and sophisticated decorative effect, ideal for classic, eclectic, Hollywood Regency interiors or representative residences.

The upholstered seat is covered in decorative fabric (likely a 20th-century refresh). Under the seat, traditional jute straps and artisanal workmanship are visible, testimony to its period construction.

Conditions

Good overall condition for its age.
Natural signs of wear are present, with light abrasions and small losses to the gilding and lacquer, consistent with well over a century of life. In both chairs, a knob at the top is missing as shown in the photo. Some of the back slats are fragile and may require restoration. Solid and stable structure. Upholstery shows signs of time.
