Antique Crucifix - Ivory - 19th century

Monumental crucifix with ivory corpus, mid-19th century

Large and richly executed crucifix, consisting of an ivory Corpus Christi mounted on a wooden cross, inlaid with ivory. The corpus is fully three-dimensionally carved and shows Christ with arms raised, the head slightly tilted to the right, the facial features expressive and finely worked. The anatomy is carefully modeled, with clear attention to the musculature of the chest, abdomen and legs. The loincloth (perizonium) is plastically rendered with subtle folds.

The cross is equipped with an ivory INRI plate, a central rosette motif behind the head, and decorative ivory elements, including a skull with crossed bones (Golgotha symbol) beneath the corpus. On either side ivory rays have been applied.

The whole rests on an extensive architectural wooden base, inlaid with ivory and composed of curved support forms, a chessboard-like inlay field and floral ivory appliqués. At the base there are small vase-shaped holders with metal floral ornaments.

The ivory shows a warm, natural patina with light signs of aging and fine drying cracks, appropriate to age and material. No major restorations visible; a few small stress lines and signs of use present.
