Bronze Age Bronze Bull Figurine
No. 102916288

Bronze Age Bronze Bull Figurine
A fine Bronze Age bronze stylised animal figurine, possibly a bull. It features a small hump behind the neck, short legs, and a rounded triangular face with small ears. The rounded legs are similar in size and shape, except the back left leg which is partly broken off. Earthly encrustations to the surface, and signs of wear as consistent with its age such as minor chips and scratches. The right ear of the bull is also chipped. The figurine is able to stand unassisted, despite its damaged leg.
Animals are a recurring motif in Bronze Age art and metalwork. The prevalence and intricacy of horse depictions, as well as horse equipment, in Bronze Age bronzes implies a great significance of the animal in the culture. The manufacturers of the these bronzes, though unknown, are widely understood to have been a nomadic people, and horses would have played a crucial role in almost every aspect of life, including transport, warfare, agriculture and religion.
Dimensions: (circa) L 3.1cm x W 1.9cm x H 2.5cm
Provenance: Ex London Collection, formed between 1990-present.
