Black opals, like their differently colored counterparts, occur as roundish to nodular masses without recognizable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only when this is cut (ground). Characteristic of this form of opal is its opalescence, which is evident in an intense rainbow sheen. Additionally, the base rock of the opal here is dark, grayish to black, which earned it this name.

Black opals arise, just like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sediments or volcanic rocks. Their characteristic shimmer is due to water inclusions inside this mineral.
