Description from the seller
Modernist ceiling lamp, alabaster and gilded bronze, early 20th century – France
Materials: Alabaster and gilded bronze
Style: Modernist
Period: Early 20th century
Country of origin: France
Visible flaws in the images
Dimensions: 62 x 63 x 63 cm.
Spectacular Modernist ceiling lamp, in gilded bronze and alabaster, from the early 20th century. This elegant lamp hangs from three golden cords, which support a circular frame in which the central alabaster piece fits. From it extend three light arms, in addition to the three lights on the interior, though only one is functional.
Unlike marble, alabaster is a fine-grained, compact stone; it is soft, translucent, and light, which makes it an ideal material for refined sculptures and lamps, as in this case, because it allows light to pass through.
It is a highly decorative lamp, thanks to the combination of materials, very characteristic of Modernism.
Modernism, known in France and Belgium as Art Nouveau, is the concept used to designate a movement of artistic renewal that took place from the late 19th to the early 20th century. Its main aim was to create a young, new art — freer and more modern — a break with the academicism prevailing at the time. To that end it drew inspiration from nature, but also incorporated the innovations of the Industrial Revolution, especially new materials and techniques (steel, glass…). All of this is summed up with a statement that could be read as the movement's motto: the awareness that “the future has already begun.”
Art Nouveau affected all the arts, for it is not only representative in painting or architecture, but also in furniture design, metalworking, jewelry… And, although it can be traced across nearly all of Europe, it did not affect all countries equally. In each region differences can be observed. However, the unanimous characteristics are the profusion of curved lines and asymmetry, the tendency toward stylization…
The shipping of the product will be paid by the buyer according to the dimensions, weight, and destination. Shipping costs include professional, tailor-made packaging; and personalized shipping, with tracking number and warranty.
