Description from the seller
Splendid 10-piece crystal service set: 2 bottles height 30.50 cm; 4 wine glasses height 14.50 cm x 5.40 cm mouth diameter; 4 vodka glasses height 9 cm x 5.30 cm mouth diameter
History and Description of the Saar Crystal Service (Villeroy & Boch) signed on the underside
This splendid and exceptionally complete table service is an authentic piece of European glassmaking history from the second half of the twentieth century (roughly produced between the 1960s and the 1980s).
The History and the Brand
The pieces bear on the bottom the acid-etched inscription "SAAR CRISTAL". This origin mark is linked to the prestigious crystal production of the Saar Valley (in Germany), managed by the historic brand Villeroy & Boch (in their famous Wadgassen crystal works).
The wording "Cristal" was not just a commercial name, but certified the piece’s chemical composition: a true crystal with a higher lead content (very heavy), characterized by extraordinary brilliance and a prolonged, metallic resonance (the classic "singing" of crystal).
Design Features
The goblets and serving pieces in this lot are characterized by a classic and elegant design, played on the contrast between smooth and worked surfaces:
The petal motif: The lower part of the bowl (and the bases of decanters and carafes) is decorated with broad vertical fluted channels (called ribs) that end in an arch. This design creates the optical effect of a flower opening (like a tulip) and captures the light, producing unique reflections.
The transparency: The upper part of the goblets is deliberately left smooth and perfectly transparent so as not to alter the visual perception and the color of wine or beverages poured.
The stem and foot: The goblets feature a short, solid stem with a faceted geometric connection and a wide circular foot that ensures great stability.
In excellent condition
