Description from the seller
Important Cut Crystal and Gilt Bronze Jewellery Box with Carved Crystal – Medallion with a Putto – Louis XVI Style – France, 19th Century
Exceptional oval vanity box, a high-quality piece representative of French refinement under the Second Empire (Napoleon III era). This lot combines the purity of solid crystal with the richness of a bronze (or gilt-bronze) mount with finely chased details.
Stylistic Analysis:
The lid offers a sophisticated neoclassical composition:
Central Medallion: A silvered metal bas-relief depicting a putto (angel) in a vegetal setting, surrounded by a pearl border.
Ornamentation: Two Greek-key style ribbon knots in gilt bronze flank the medallion. The belt is richly decorated with garlands of roses and relief festoons.
Crystal: The base is adorned with an important starburst cut, typical of prestigious 19th-century crystal works, offering superb plays of light.
Technical Sheet:
Dimensions: 13.7 cm (length) x 11 cm (width) x 6 cm (height).
Weight: 478 g.
Materials: Crystal, Bronze/Gilt Bronze, Medallion in silvered metal.
Origin: France, circa 1870.
Condition:
The item is in a very beautiful state of presentation. For complete transparency: there is a 3 mm chip on the inner edge of the crystal at the hinge level. This defect is virtually invisible to the naked eye and becomes completely invisible when the box is closed (see last photo). No exterior scratching is visible, only on the bottom of the box. The gilding shows an authentic antique patina that attests to its age. The hinge and catch operate perfectly."
