Match case - owl - Wood

The holder (Uil) has been treated with hard wax to prevent damage.
Probably 15th-16th century.
It holds small sticks to be lit at the fire, kept together and ready for use.
In this specimen I have inserted balsawood sticks.
This object comes from well before the time of matches and tinder sticks.
The late Middle Ages.
A little coal or ember on the coal bed or the hearth provided the fire, and with such a stick the candle or something else could be lit.
The balsawood sticks are 19.5 cm long and come from a more recent time.
