Description from the seller
School of the 19th Century – After Raphael (March 1483 in Urbino; † April 6, 1520 in Rome)
The "Beautiful Gardener"
Oil on canvas,
Overall size approx.: 105 x 78 cm (+ frame included free of charge).
Raphael's "The Beautiful Gardener" (1507–1508) is a major work of the Italian Renaissance and is housed in the Louvre. It combines in a classical manner divine grace and human tenderness. Created in his Florentine period, the composition presents the Virgin Mary, the Christ Child and John the Baptist in a peaceful landscape, influenced by Leonardo da Vinci's sfumato technique.
Pyramidal composition: Raphael uses a stable pyramidal structure, heavily influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, in which the head of the Virgin Mary forms the apex and thus creates a sense of harmony and peace. The figures and the tenderness: The Virgin Mary sits in a landscape, no longer on a throne, which brings her closer to humanity. Her tender gaze on the Jesus child, who in turn looks trustingly at his mother, creates an intimate and moving human encounter. The little John the Baptist on the left creates a connection between the sacred scene and the viewer.
Light signs of wear, some minor restorations, otherwise in good condition. Very beautiful, large format. Excellent quality.
Provenance: Private collection from Northern France.
