Weight: 710 g
Crest / African helmet made of wood from the Mossi people of Burkina Faso.
Some Mossi masks depict wild animals such as the buffalo, the elephant, and the lion, which are the most common.
By contrast, it is rarer to see domestic animals commemorated as ritual masks.
Zoomorphic masks of animals such as the Ram, the Goat, the Horse, the Rooster, the Dog will nevertheless add additional symbolism to the masquerades, but also in some cases represent the animal that will be sacrificed.
Burkina Faso is a landlocked West African state lying between Mali to the north and west, Niger to the east, Benin, Togo, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire to the south.
The first Mossi empire was founded in the 15th century by invaders from Ghana.
Formerly known as Upper Volta, the country’s name became Burkiba-Faso in 1984.
“burkina” means “honest man” and in Dioula, “faso” means “house of ancestors” or “country.” Taken together, the name Burkina Faso means "the homeland of honest people".
The Mossi are the largest ethnic group in Burkina Faso.
