Description from the seller
Russian four-panel icon (Tschetyretchastnaja)
Late 18th century (1780/1800) - with gesso relief
Technique: egg tempera on a wooden panel with a gesso ground.
This authentic hand-painted icon is divided into four registers, each featuring important saints from the Orthodox tradition:
TOP LEFT: Saint John the Forerunner (John the Baptist).
TOP RIGHT: Saints Niphont and Antipas (protectors against illness).
BOTTOM LEFT: Saint George the Victorious on horseback, slaying the dragon.
BOTTOM RIGHT: Saints Modestus and Blasius (traditional protectors of livestock).
TSISKANIYE: The edges of the icon are adorned with a tactile relief in the gesso, an artisanal technique that imitates the look of a precious metal surround.
PANEL CONSTRUCTION: The rear shows hand-tapered sponki grooves, characteristic of high-quality panel construction around 1800.
Painting style: Refined rendering of faces and garments with typical late 18th-century highlights.
Condition: In honest antique condition.
The panel shows a natural aging crack at the bottom.
The original crossbars (sponki) are missing.
No active woodworm detected.
The painting has a beautiful patina and light wear that fits the age of over 200 years.
