Description from the seller
Uv Checked - Good condition
Water pipe
End of the 19th century, Vietnam
Produced in Jingdezhen, China, late Qing Dynasty
Commissioned for the Vietnamese market during the Nguyen period (late 19th century)
Porcelain called "Huế Blue".
The term Huế Blue designates a production of Chinese porcelain made exclusively for the Vietnamese imperial court and the mandarin elite. Although made in Jingdezhen, the models, shapes and motifs were dictated by Vietnamese patrons.
This water pipe testifies to the refinement of social habits in the 19th century, where tobacco use and sometimes opium was codified by utilitarian art objects.
The object features a decoration of geometric cartouches and stylized floral motifs with a naturalistic composition depicting lotus flowers emerging from calm water, symbol of purity in Buddhist and Confucian cosmogony. The piece is enriched with copper alloy reinforcements, including structural rings and an articulated hearth connected by a fine chain, typical of prestige accessories for smokers of the era. Apocryphal mark on the base.
Condition:
Presence of a patina from use on the metal elements. The glaze shows a network of uniform and stable cracks. Overall good condition for its age.
Provenance: Kanaka The Collection
