Review by What Hi-Fi (5* of 5)
The S30s look stylish, sound fantastic and offer an intriguing alternative to the established favorites in this segment.
+ Clear, powerful
+ solid bass from such a small enclosure
+ beautifully built
+ good value for money
The S30s are small, only 22 cm high and 16 cm wide. A touch smaller and it would have been difficult to fit the 10 cm woven composite mid/bass unit and the 25 mm soft-dome tweeter in the front panel.
Now the tweeter front panel is cut away to bring the two drivers closer together for better integration. The driver design enables a simplified crossover filter, and the speakers are bi-wireable for even more definition and control.
The cabinet volume is preserved by making the S30s relatively deep from front to back. At the rear, one component combines the bi-wire terminal block and the bass reflex port. The speakers are designed to be placed at least 8 cm from a rear wall.
These are very capable speakers with a winning mix of punch and detail. The bass is not seismic, although the playback extends impressively down to 59 Hz, but it is engaging due to its speed and precision, making music — whether rock or dramatic classical pieces — sound powerful.
Bass lines are easy to follow and drums sound reasonably full and well defined.
But it is in the midrange and high end that the S30s truly excel, and we suspect this is largely due to the minimal crossover filter. Voices are open and detailed, and instruments — from acoustic to electric — have an excellent character and real bite when needed.
Position these speakers on solid, heavy stands, a touch toward the listening position, and you’ll get a well-focused, precisely rendered soundscape with an excellent sense of ambience.
The S30s adhere to Cambridge’s well-known formula: they look stylish, sound fantastic, and offer an intriguing alternative to the established favorites in this segment.
