Grundig - Satellit Transistor 5000 Transistor radio

Satellit Transistor 5000 represents the first model of the famous Satellit series by Grundig and one of the most advanced and iconic portable radios of its era. Produced in 1964, it combines high-level technical performance with an elegant and functional aesthetic. Designed for enthusiasts of shortwave listening and for those seeking uncompromising quality, this model stands out for the wooden cabinet, the attention to detail typical of German craftsmanship, and the extraordinary reception capability across multiple bands, which at the time made it a cutting‑edge instrument for both home use and for travelers and amateur radio operators.

This unit presents overall very good aesthetic condition considering its age. It bears signs of wear and use more accentuated on the top (a stain at the beginning of the 'Satellit' lettering), and the chromed speaker grille seen from certain angles has lost brightness in some spots, but it is intact. Being a device over 60 years old, the condition suggests it has certainly been well cared for.
The radio’s operation is excellent, it receives on all available bands, with FM audio becoming fantastic—warm, clear, and powerful. Also excellent is the reception of world stations on shortwave, with the rotary drum turning smoothly and the useful fine-tuning function to best center distant stations. During the shortwave test it received stations from Europe, Russia, and Asia and national radio amateurs well.

The radio has been recently serviced, with the illumination of the frequency scale replaced by LED light (the shortwave drum illumination remains original and works) and the installation of a modern and safe external power supply (battery option removed). The on-off switch on the radio is present and rotates, but has been disabled. The radio powers on and off normally with the white switch on the cord.
The original antenna is functional and fits completely within the radio case. Note some deformation on the last segment, and the penultimate segment appears a bit crushed at the bottom. Therefore, avoid pulling the last part of the antenna hard, but during testing it proved solid.
The small needle signal indicator is functional, however the graduated panel behind the needle is a little loose and sometimes it brushes it, hindering it.

Collector’s radio, but fantastic also for everyday use, with a unique sound and exceptional reception capacity.
