One black earthenware mourning service pot with lid, produced in the United Kingdom (Staffordshire) and dating to circa 1850–1900, in good used condition with minor signs of aging, about 12.5 cm tall including the lid knob, 9.5 cm without the lid, and 11 cm in maximum diameter, featuring a lid knop shaped as a grieving woman and subtle geometric patterns.
Description from the seller
An especially decorative and historically interesting black stoneware lid jar is offered, probably made in Staffordshire at the end of the 18th century or the beginning of the 19th century.
This refined jar is likely part of a so-called mourning service, a practice that was very popular in the 19th century. During mourning periods, which could last weeks to even years, not only clothing but also tableware was adjusted.
Characteristic of such objects are symbolic elements that express grief and remembrance.
The lid is topped with a beautifully modeled knob in the shape of a grieving woman, a powerful and rare motif that underscores the emotional charge of mourning services. The jar itself is richly decorated with subtle geometric and stylized patterns, executed in deep black stoneware.
Dimensions:
Height (including the lid knob): approx. 12.5 cm
Height without the lid: approx. 9.5 cm
Diameter (max): approx. 11 cm
Diameter of the lid: approx. 8 cm
Condition: The jar is in beautiful condition for its age, with a few small imperfections. See detail photos for a good impression.
This object is a special addition for collectors of antique pottery, mourning memorabilia, or historic tableware from the Georgian period.
Shipping: Will be carefully packed and shipped worldwide via PostNL through the Catawiki shipping service.
