Description from the seller

African crest – Wooden sculpture – Tyiwara style – Bambara people, Mali

Imposing African wooden crest sculpture representing a stylization of the antelope Tyi Wara, a major emblem of the Bambara people of Mali. This type of crest was worn mounted on a helmet made of plant fibers during agricultural ceremonies celebrating field fertility and the transmission of agricultural knowledge.

The work is characterized by an assembly of geometric and organic shapes, where the animal’s body is distinguished by incised motifs along the back, a tall, openwork crest recalling plant growth, as well as abstract elements conveying vital energy and fertility.

The dynamic, slender composition is highlighted by a beautiful ancient brown patina that testifies to its age and its traditional ritual use.

This crest belongs to the great Bambara sculpture tradition, among whose Tyiwara expressions are among the most emblematic artistic expressions of West Africa.

Originating from an old European private collection, this piece is a fine example of Bambara ritual art from the 20th century

Material: hard wood, brown patina
Condition: good overall with wear and cracks related to age and ritual use
