Alfonso XII alfonsine turtle table, ebonized wood and marble top, c. 1900s – Spain
Style: Alfonsine
Materials: Ebonized wood and marble top
Period: Early 20th century
Country of origin: Spain
Provenance: Private collection
Good condition for its age and use
Dimensions: 78 x 93 x 68 cm.
Spectacular Alfonsine turtle table, with a structure in ebonized wood and a white marble top with gray veining. It takes this name due to the characteristic shape of its marble top, which imitates the shell of a turtle (turtle top). It stands out for its central carved foot, which branches into ornamental curved legs and the small hanging finials called “fieles” under the plinth.
It is known as the Alfonsine style to the artistic style dominant in Spain during the reign of Alfonso XII (1870-1900). The monarch (son of Queen Isabella II and Francisco de Asís), born in Madrid, went into exile in Paris at the triumph of the 1968 Revolution. He completed his academic and military education in Vienna and England. Isabella II abdicated in his favor in 1870, but Alfonso did not return to Spain until 1873. Although he died in 1885, it is considered that his reign continued during the regency of his second wife, until his son, Alfonso XIII, reached majority and was proclaimed king in 1901. This period is also known as the Restoration, due to the revolution that triumphed during Isabella II’s reign.
