Clown, an original oil painting portrait by Frits Klein (1898–1990) from the Netherlands, dated 1930, signed and sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Oil on canvas painting featuring a portrait of a clown. The work was created by Frits Klein (1898–1990), the father of Yves Klein. He was born in Bandung (Indonesia) and at the age of five moved with his family to the Netherlands.
For a large part of his adult life he commuted between Paris and Wassenaar. Klein painted, among other things, landscapes such as beaches and parks, but also scenes from circus life, in which horses play a particularly important role. His work is characterized by a dreamlike atmosphere. Possible sources of inspiration include Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard and William Turner. Frits Klein is therefore often referred to as the ‘painter of light’. Thematically, his work shows affinities with that of Marc Chagall and Giorgio de Chirico.
Currently, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam is showing an exhibition about Yves Klein and his family, including Frits Klein.
