Western Asiatic Gold Pendant

A fine Western Asiatic pendant modelled in gold with a suspension loop, added in antiquity, to the top. The jewel features an intricate decoration comprising of two coiled wire drops with a middle one holding a red glass bead, possibly carnelian, in place. At the bottom of all three drops sits a gold dome. Further enrichments include three gold spikes at the top in which two would have once held inlays. Such pendant has been adapted from an earring in ancient times, with the suspension loop modelled from ancient electrum. Many grand civilizations inhabited the area of Western Asia in Antiquity, and their wealth and prosperity is witnessed by the very sophisticated precious metal crafting of jewellery. Gold would have been hammered down to a thin layer and manipulated into different shapes. Gold, electrum and silver jewellery would have featured gold granules, glass and semi-precious stone inlays and detailed engravings. Measurements: L 2.3cm x W 1.3cm Provenance: Ex Japanese private collection, deceased, 1970-2010.
