Dogon

This beautiful Bambou-toro figure encapsulates the concentrate of all the aesthetic and artistic qualities masterfully expressed by the great classical sculpture of the Dogon. Beautiful for quality of carving, proportion of volumes and for the plastic solutions adopted by the sculptor ( note the entire composition of the face with the square eyes and the harmonious arrangement of the arms). Also beautiful for the striking simplicity of the only back scarification present, in Dr. Bebbe Berna's opinion evoking the "water-word path," and for the crusty patina resulting from the many devotional offerings received over time. Beautiful, finally, for the wear and tear, the wear and tear and the multiple signs of use present that give clear evidence of the antiquity of this object. Provenance: Galerie Lemaire, Amsterdam, 1990's,
