A pair of important carved solid walnut wood figures of winged mythological creatures in the Baroque decorative tradition, dating to 1750–1800, each measuring 44 x 14 x 31 cm, in good used condition with minor signs of age.
Description from the seller
Important pair of carved wooden caryatids
Extraordinary pair of sculptural elements in solid wood finely carved, depicting fantastic winged figures with a mythological taste, between sphinxes and a classical creature, characterized by an elegant fusion between human anatomy and a leonine body. The sinuous lines, full volumes and the quality of the sculpture highlight a skilled hand, capable of conveying movement and harmony to the entire composition.
The two figures feature feminine faces with delicate and idealized features, with flowing hairstyles and richly worked wings, where every feather is rendered with great attention to detail. The sturdy, crouched body recalls Baroque decorative tradition, with a strong scenographic and ornamental component typical of important furnishings intended for prestigious residences.
Made in native solid walnut, an noble essence par excellence in European cabinetmaking, prized for its compactness, stability and warm dark tones, which here emerge with a natural patina of great charm. The wooden material, living and deep, further enhances the plastic modeling of the sculptures.
The perfectly flat and smooth summit suggests use as load-bearing elements for a supporting surface, plausibly a table, console or a piece of furniture with a glass or marble top. Today they also lend themselves magnificently to a decorative reuse with great impact: ideal as bases for a modern top or as independent sculptural elements in classical, eclectic or contemporary interiors.
Important and scenographic dimensions: length 44 cm, width 14 cm, height 31 cm each.
Very good state of conservation considering the age. Some small signs of wear and light traces of old termite holes are noted, already treated and restored, today no longer visible to the naked eye and not invasive to the overall aesthetics. Structurally solid and ready to use.
Objects of great presence and quality, perfect for collectors, interior designers, or for anyone wishing to insert authentic, historically and decoratively strong elements into their home.
Photos are an integral part of the description. Guaranteed careful packaging entrusted to professionals in the field.
