Neoclassical silver monstrance – Joseph Convert, Lyon (1798-1809)
Monstrance in silver, neoclassical.
It rests on a richly chased pyramidal base with Eucharistic motifs, including the Lamb of God, the Trinity, as well as ears of corn associated with the vine. The knot takes the shape of an urn, surmounted by a sheaf of wheat entwined with tendrils, bearing a radiant glory arranged around a cloud. The lunule is absent.
The piece bears the Coq hallmark, first title of the départements (1798-1809).
The goldsmith’s mark corresponds to Joseph Convert, active in Lyon (vertical diamond with the initials J C, accompanied by a clover at the top and a dot at the point), used from 1798 to 1809 and then around 1813 until before 1832.
Presence of the heavy departmental guarantee mark (80 for Fontenay in Vendée). An “ET” mark is also visible on the base, near the title mark.
Weight: 755 g. Height: 51 cm. Presented in its original case.
