Description from the seller
The ancestral statues of the Buyu (Basikasingo): Memory and spiritual mediation
Among the Buyu, settled between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia, ancestral statues occupy a central place in the transmission of lineages and community protection. Carved in hard wood, often stylized with geometric features, these effigies embody the spirits of the ancestors (bakulu or mizimu), considered guardians of social and cosmic order.
Unlike the Nkishi of the Bakongo, these statues are not objects “activated” by substances, but memory supports placed in family sanctuaries. Their role is both mnemonic (recalling the exploits of the deceased) and ritual (interceding during crises). Attributes, such as scarifications or hairstyles, emphasize clan identity and the deceased’s status.
These works reveal a cyclical conception of time, where the ancestors remain active in the present, guiding the living through trials.
