Description from the seller
Pfemba statues of the Bakongo: Fertility and maternal power
The Pfemba, emblematic female statues of the Bakongo, celebrate motherhood as the foundation of social and spiritual life. Representing a seated or standing woman, bearing a child on the back or at the hip, these sculptures embody the ideal of fertility, protection and transmission of lineages. Their hieratic posture and their attributes (scarifications, elaborate hairstyles) emphasize the sacred status of the mother, mediator between the ancestors and future generations.
Unlike Nkishi, the Pfemba are not objects "charged" with magical substances, but symbols of blessing. Placed in homes or family altars, they remind us of the central role of women in the perpetuation of the community. Their aesthetics, both realistic and stylized, reflect a cosmology where procreation is an act both natural and divine.
