Portuguese circular silver box, 833 fine silver, from Porto, dating to the 1940s, with a heavily repoussé and chiselled floral lid surrounding a plain central medallion, an interior vermeil gold finish on both lid and base, and dimensions of 9 cm diameter and 5 cm deep with a total weight of about 109 g.
Description from the seller
Elegant circular box of Portuguese 833 thousandths sterling silver, with a lid richly decorated using repousé and chased technique with an exquisite floral motif. The composition features a crown of flowers —including daisies and violets— arranged around a central smooth medallion, ideal for engraving or monogram. The background of the lid is worked with a fine dotted (matted) finish that enhances the relief of the flowers.
The interior of the piece is completely gilt vermeil (gold wash over silver), both on the lid and the base, indicating that it was probably conceived as a vanity box, jewelry box, or to contain powders or pills. The quality of the interior gilding is preserved in excellent condition, with a warm and uniform tone.
The piece bears the official Portuguese hallmarks clearly visible on the base: the guarantee mark with an eagle inside a octagon, corresponding to the Porto (Oporto) assay office, legal standard of second title (833 thousandths), in use between 1938 and 1984. The total weight is approximately 108.6 grams according to the scale visible in the images. Its dimensions are 9 cm in diameter and 4 cm in height.
