Description from the seller
Exceptional Gallia Sycamore service by Christofle, produced from 1904.
Created at the beginning of the 20th century, at the time of the famous Paris Exposition of 1900, the Gallia collection takes its name from a tin alloy of enormous importance in its day. With its name harking back to “Gaul” and the Gallic rooster as brand and symbol, the Gallia metal once again put the spotlight on French innovation. This alloy was a milestone in Christofle’s history. By producing high-quality, durable tableware, the Gallia metal had the advantage of being robust and longer-lasting. It could also be cast in steel molds instead of being hammered into shape.
The Gallia metal quickly became a springboard for ideas for Christofle. The collections were produced in bold, modern styles at a time when tableware and decorative arts in general were offering the same motifs from the Louis XVI, XVIII and XIX centuries in a loop since 1850. This was the rise of Art Nouveau, which focused on Nature – or a stylized version of it. Subsequently, the 20th century saw an explosion of new styles, from Art Deco to Modernism.
The Gallia collection gave Christofle’s silversmiths the opportunity to experiment. As early as 1900, collaborations with extraordinary artists and designers under the name Gallia and under Christofle’s aegis made the rooster a symbol of the avant-garde movement — and it would remain so for a century.
The spectacular Sycamore tea service designed by Christofle in 1904 is decorated with a unique Christofle motif inspired by the intricate foliage and fruits of the sycamore maple and its distinctive double samaras, the shape of which resembles butterfly wings. These winged seeds are the main motif of the Sycamore service designed in 1904.
The service offered at auction consists of 5 pieces:
1 tray
1 milk jug
1 sugar bowl
1 teapot
1 coffee pot
Each piece of the service is made of silver-plated metal.
Items in excellent condition, plating still vivid. A defect is noted in the coffee pot lid, which, as shown in the photographs, is broken. Additionally, the tray shows greater loss of silver plating. These defects are easily repairable with professional restoration.
