The development is covered from the early 13th century with water clocks and hourglasses to the early modern era of the twentieth century with atomic clocks and radio-controlled timekeeping instruments. The history of development, from gatekeeper clocks, clocks for use in houses, tower clocks and specialist precise timepieces for various scientific and societal purposes. At length, various types of clocks are discussed as well as the origin both regionally and nationally. Technical falsifications, materials, restorations, names of clockmakers etc. pass under review.
