Hanau - c. 1890 - Tankard - 550 g - .830 silver

This exceptional Baroque Revival silver tankard, circa 1890, crafted for the discerning Swedish market. Hallmarked with 830 silver (83% purity, a higher continental standard often selected for export pieces to ensure durability and brilliance), the tankard exemplifies the renowned Hanau silversmiths' mastery in producing elaborate "antique-style" hollowware that revived 17th- and early 18th-century Continental Baroque aesthetics. Standing 19 cm tall and weighing a substantial 550 grams, this impressive lidded vessel is raised on three spherical ball feet, lending it graceful elevation and stability. The body features richly repoussé and chased decoration in high Baroque taste: undulating acanthus scrolls, swirling foliage, blooming flowers, clusters of grapes, and rocaille-like cartouches enclose floral reserves with naturalistic blossoms and fruit motifs. These elements are executed with exceptional depth and crisp detail, creating a sense of movement and opulence across the surface. The hinged domed cover is surmounted by a finely modeled finial resembling a fruiting grape bunch or artichoke, flanked by scrolling vegetal borders and crowned with a lobed rim echoing the footed base. The handle is boldly cast and chased with conforming floral and foliate ornament, terminating in elegant volutes for comfortable grip, while the thumbpiece is articulated as a figural or sculptural element typical of period-inspired Hanau designs. The interior displays a pleasing soft patina consistent with age and careful preservation. Hanau became a leading European center for revival silver in the late 19th century, producing luxurious objects that evoked the grandeur of earlier epochs for export markets, including Scandinavia. Pieces destined for Sweden were frequently executed in 830 silver to align with regional preferences for robust yet richly decorated tableware. This tankard is in excellent overall condition, with sharp chasing, intact hinge, no significant dents, repairs, or loss to the gilding (where present), and a lovely original surface patina that enhances its character. A statement piece of Continental silver craftsmanship, ideal for advanced collections of Baroque Revival or Hanau silver, or as a striking centerpiece for display or ceremonial use. Height: 19 cm Weight: 550 g Silver standard: 830/1000 (German export grade) Circa: 1890, Hanau Provenance note: Tailored for the Swedish market, reflecting the era's taste for opulent imported silver among affluent Nordic households.
