Cornelis Jan Mension painted landscapes, cityscapes and still lifes, but he was especially known for his paintings of small animals such as birds and mice, apes and larger wild animals. As a painter he was shaped by the lessons of Franz Helfferich in The Hague and afterwards he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in the same city. A fairly fluid impressionism is the style he applied throughout his life. Mension was also an excellent etcher and lithographer.
