Description from the seller

GENERAL:
The Citroën GS is one of the French firm's most emblematic models, awarded European Car of the Year in 1971 for its revolutionary aerodynamic design and its advanced hydropneumatic suspension. This particular example is a 1977 Citroën GS Club from the second series, with the historical peculiarity of having been built at the Vigo factory in Spain. Models produced in Vigo from summer 1976 to early 1977 are especially interesting for collectors, as they feature a transitional configuration with mixed characteristics. This unit registered in July 1977 preserves elements typical of the first series, such as the wheels and the iconic magnifying speedometer, combined with the redesigned rear lighting group of the second series. Its cultural impact is undeniable, having even appeared in Netflix productions and being the subject of various reports on blogs and specialized YouTube channels. In short, it is a striking and reliable vehicle that allows full enjoyment of the aesthetics and driving experience of the 1970s.

BODYWORK AND PAINT:
The overall exterior condition is superb and stands out for its vibrant Teneré orange color, giving it an authentic 1970s vibe. The current owner has carried out remediation and painting work on the four doors over the last three years to ensure its preservation. The floors, both in the luggage area and in the cabin, are completely free of rust. Aesthetically it shows only some light scuffs at the tips of the chromed bumpers, maintaining a flawless visual presence.

MECHANICS:
Mechanically, the car is in very good condition, with a smooth and quiet engine operation. In 2012, its previous owner, who was a Citroën mechanic, carried out a comprehensive engine refresh that included replacement of sleeves, rings, pistons, and seals, as well as checking the rear axle and replacing the clutch. Recently performed maintenance includes the timing belt, fuel line, and replacement of LHM spheres in August 2023. The rear tires have less than 500 kilometers of use. The suspension and braking system work perfectly, the gearbox shifts smoothly, and oil leaks are practically nil, something not common for this model. As is logical in a car of almost 50 years, it requires a few minutes with the starter to reach its optimal operating temperature.

INTERIOR:
The cabin has been carefully preserved and updated. In 2023, the seats were fully reupholstered in the original orange color with a suede-like finish. The rest of the interior remains entirely original, including the factory Teneré orange door panels. The only concession to modernity is the radio with USB and Bluetooth, while the electrical system and heating are in perfect working order. The instrument cluster remains notable for retaining the famous magnifying speedometer typical of the early units.

DOCUMENTATION:
The vehicle is properly registered as a historic vehicle in Spain. It has clear provenance, with the current seller being its third owner since 2018. There is evidence of the work performed by the second owner, a former professional of the brand, as well as of the revisions and improvements carried out in the most recent period. Additionally, the car has a documented media visibility history across various online publications.

PICK-UP:
The car is located in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, where the buyer will need to arrange collection. The vehicle is delivered in its current running and preserving condition. Included with the sale is a spare parts lot visible in the photographs, including four original second-series GS wheels, ideal for anyone wishing to alternate the vehicle’s aesthetics.

OTHER INFORMATION:
Although the car is mechanically reliable and ready for immediate enjoyment, basic preventive maintenance work is not ruled out given that the vehicle is approaching 50 years of age, such as a starter motor inspection to ensure longevity. This is a unique opportunity to acquire a piece of Spanish automotive history in an exceptional state of conservation.

Disclaimer

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
