For sale is an excellent, museum-quality cabinet specimen for enthusiasts of classic European localities.
It is a large hand specimen of sulfur, encrusted with two generations of aragonite crystals.
The facts:
• Location: Racalmuto, Agrigento Province, Sicily, Italy
• Age: Old find from the 1970s (the mines have long since closed!)
• Weight: 1271 grams (approx. 1.27 kg)
• Dimensions: approx. 17 cm x 11 cm x 7 cm
The highlight for collectors:
This piece shows the fascinating two generations of aragonite growth: a finely crystalline first generation and atop it the distinctive, blocky-tabular crystals of the second generation. The matrix consists of coarse, honey-yellow sulfur.
Spectacular UV activity:
Under long-wave UV light (UV-A / black light) both generations of aragonite exhibit an intense, vivid pink fluorescence.
Additionally, the piece possesses a noticeable and lasting phosphorescence (afterglow) when the light source is turned off. An absolute eye-catcher in any systematic or aesthetic collection.
The condition of the crystals is remarkably well-preserved for its age, with hardly any damage visible. The piece is stable and ready for immediate display.
