Flemish School of the 17th century, Orpheus and Eurydice. 

Orpheus, the legendary musician, descends into the underworld to rescue his wife Eurydice, who had died on their wedding day from a snake bite. With his song he moves Hades, who allows him to bring Eurydice back, on the condition that he does not turn around before reaching the surface. Plagued by doubts, Orpheus looks back and loses Eurydice forever. Here you see the moment Eurydice is overtaken by the demons of the underworld.

Flämische Schule des 17. Jahrhunderts, Orpheus und Eurydike. 

Orpheus, der legendäre Musiker, steigt in die Unterwelt hinab, um seine Frau Eurydike zu retten, die am Tag ihrer Hochzeit durch einen Schlangenbiss ums Leben gekommen war. Mit seinem Gesang rührt er Hades, der ihm erlaubt, Eurydike zurückzubringen, unter der Bedingung, dass er sich nicht umdreht, bevor er die Oberfläche erreicht. Von Zweifeln geplagt, blickt Orpheus zurück und verliert Eurydike für immer. Hier sieht man den Moment, in dem Eurydike von den Dämonen der Unterwelt eingeholt wird.

Öl auf Holztafel. Einige Gebrauchsspuren, horizontaler Riss, der auf der Rückseite durch eine Verstärkung stabilisiert wurde.
