Italian mid-20th century pedestal in Carrara arabescato marble with a Salomonica tortiglione twisted shaft, a square top, and an octagonal base, in good condition with minor age-related marks.
Description from the seller
This extraordinary decorative piece is a pedestal carved from Italian marble, probably dating from the mid-20th century. Traditionally, these items were used in grand foyers or salons to display busts, vases, or sculptures.
Carved in Arabescato Carrara marble, characterized by soft gray veins.
The most distinctive feature is the Solomon-like (spiraled) turning of the shaft. This twisted style was popularized during the Baroque period and gives the piece a sense of movement and elegance.
It features a square upper surface (the abacus) designed to safely support heavy objects. The base is octagonal, providing a solid footprint to prevent tipping.
The shaft’s central band presents a decorative horizontal ring (a 'collar') adorned with acanthus leaf motifs or simple grooves to interrupt the vertical lines.
The piece is in good preserved condition, with the natural gray veining of the marble highlighting its authenticity and the stone’s high quality. The structure is solid and shows only small imperfections typical of use, all consistent with its age.
Dimensions:
Height: 97 cm
Top plate: 22.5 x 22.5 cm
Base: 23 x 23 cm
Weight: 16.8 kg
The column is disassemblable into multiple parts and will be shipped disassembled to preserve its integrity; assembly (simple) will be the buyer’s responsibility.
