Black opals occur, just like their multicolored counterparts, as globular to nodular masses with no detectable crystal structure. Their beauty usually reveals itself only upon grinding these masses. Characteristic of this form of opals is their opalescence, which shines vividly with a rainbow-like glow. Additionally, the host rock of the opal here is dark, gray to black, which gave it its name.

Black opals form, like other opals, from silica-rich fluids that crystallize in sedimentary or igneous rocks. Their distinctive shimmer is due to water inclusions inside the mineral.
