Description from the seller
Crucified Christ in carved wood
Spanish School, late 17th century
Provenance: European private collection
Region: Spain, possibly northern Spain
Period: ca. 1670-1700
Material: Carved wood with remnants of polychromy
Style: Popular devotional imagery
Devotional sculpture representing Christ crucified, carved in wood and originally polychromed, currently preserving traces softened by the passage of time. The figure presents an elongated and stylized modeling, with schematic anatomy where the ribs are marked by incisions and a flat-treated abdomen, traits typical of the late Renaissance Spanish popular imagery.
The face, with a serene and restrained expression, shows simplified features, almond-shaped eyes, a beard and hair rendered by parallel incisions. The crown of thorns appears carved in the wood itself. The loincloth, knotted at the side, is arranged in rigid and geometric folds, away from full Baroque dynamism, which reinforces its attribution to a context of traditional production, possibly from the northern Iberian Peninsula.
From a technical standpoint, the carving shows assembly at the arms in keeping with common practices of the 17th century. The surface shows a homogeneous patina with natural wear, losses of polychromy and small cracks coherent with its age. On the back there are holes and old fixing elements compatible with its original mounting. The cross and base correspond to a later period, probably the 19th century.
A devotional work, conceived for domestic oratory spaces, which retains a notable presence within its sobriety of form and constitutes a good example of Spanish popular religious sculpture from the late 17th century.
Condition: general wear, losses of polychromy, cracks and marks typical of age. No major structural damage. Woodworm treated.
