AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

38 cm with pedestal
ORIGIN:
- Private collection inherited from a Frenchman who traveled in Central Africa in the 1960s-70s. Having participated in public health missions in remote villages, André was thus sensitized to the arts of Africa, their forms and their uses. As was often customary, services rendered were thanked with gifts upon departure, among them masks, statues and other objects laden with meaning. The set of several dozen pieces was also supplemented by on-site purchases in Bujumbura in particular, as well as in France thereafter. -

Chokwe masks, originating from Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo, are among the most recognizable in African art. Carved from dense woods such as mukula or mututi, they are distinguished by their realistic features, half-closed eyes, their mouth often slightly open and their elaborate coiffure, sometimes adorned with geometric motifs or scarifications.

These masks generally embody ancestors, spirits or figures of power, and play a central role in initiation ceremonies, funerals, or rites of passage. Their surface is carefully polished and coated with a smooth patina, sometimes tinted with natural pigments such as kaolin or ochre, to reinforce their sacred dimension.

In Chokwe tradition, masks are used to transmit moral teachings, to celebrate the memory of the deceased, or to invoke the protection of spirits. Their making, reserved for initiated artisans, follows a rigorous process, respecting the symbolic and spiritual rules of the community.
Today, these masks are also recognized for their artistic value, illustrating the balance between realism and symbolism in African art. Each piece remains a living testimony of Chokwe beliefs and history.
