Ritratto di donna, an oil on canvas Realism portrait from the 19th century, attributed to Léon Brunin (Belgium), sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Up for auction is an elegant half-length female portrait, traditionally attributed to the Belgian painter Léon Brunin (Antwerp 1861-1949).
The work depicts a lady with a Spanish-influenced style, with a red flower in her hair, a richly decorated dress, a bracelet, and a cigarette in her right hand. The composition, the dark background, and the rendering of the face confer an intense and theatrical presence to the painting, typical of late 19th-century portraiture and figure painting.
On the back there is an old handwritten label in French, referring the work to Léon Brunin and bearing the date “Anvers 1881.” The inscription also mentions the title/name “Carmeny.” For accuracy, the work is therefore offered as attributed to Léon Brunin, based on the verso label, the provenance, and the overall stylistic coherence.
The painting is sold with its important carved gilded wooden frame, of strong decorative impact, perfectly coherent with the taste of the work.
Provenance: from a private collection.
Medium: Oil on canvas
Era: 1881 (date on the verso label)
Signature / inscriptions: Ancient handwritten label on the back with reference to Léon Brunin, “Anvers 1881” and “Carmeny.” Signature not visible on the front.
Dimensions
Sight / painting: about 59 x 41 cm
With frame: about 84 x 65 cm
Conditions
Overall good for its age.
Normal signs of time, surface patina, slight craquelure / tension of the paint film, and wear compatible with an 19th-century work.
Frame with normal signs of wear, knocks, and abrasions due to age and use.
It is advised to carefully view all photographs, which are part of the description.
Shipping
Given the presence of the antique frame and the weight of the piece, a pickup in person is preferred, but careful shipping with professional packing is possible at the buyer’s expense.
