The woman in this miniature shares characteristics with traditional 18th-century portrayals of Madame de Pompadour—specifically the powdered hair, delicate facial features, and elaborate period dress with lace or ruffles. The porcelain plaque features a finely painted portrait set against a rich celestial blue ground with gilt detailing, in the classic French Sèvres manner. Mounted within a black lacquered wooden surround with a gilded brass cover, suggesting it was originally part of a decorative object such as cabinet, or piece of furniture.
