Eclair - Carbide lamp - Bicycle light - 1900

An exceptionally beautiful and complete antique brass carbide lantern from the French brand Éclair, engraved on the gracefully decorated copper lid on top. Éclair was one of the most renowned French brands for bicycle and early automobile lanterns around the turn of the century.

The lantern features a cylindrical carbide reservoir with ribs at the bottom for the carbide mixture, a compact brass lantern body with a large convex front lens in a hinged mount at the front, on both sides a striking green cut-crystal side lamp, and an adjustable wheel for the flame. The decorative copper lid with the engraved brand "ÉCLAIR" is surrounded by a cast floral border.

The green cut-crystal side lamps are a rare and luxurious detail that sets this specimen apart from simpler carbide lanterns — typical of the higher market segment of the Belle Époque bicycle world.

Condition: good vintage condition with authentic patina appropriate to its great age. To the left of the front lens the brass lamp is dented — see photos. Also complete with all original parts including the front-lens mount.
