AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Kela DRC

This amazing cubist male figure probably dates from before the invention of Cubism in Europe. Since the statuette shows evidence that it was used for a ritual context for some time, this would date it to the first half of the 20th century. The figures represent the Mongo ancestor. The Kela are neighbors of the Yela and the Mbole and belong to the Lilwa Society. Originally this figure had a female companion. Material: wood, pigment, kaolin. Fine patina caused by use and age. In the photos there is very little wear to be seen. The head has a diamond shape. The slanted shoulders mean that there is no neck as such on the front or back of the figure. The blunt block feet show no toes. Eyebrows above the hollowed eyes. A simple but very strong work of art.
