Description from the seller
Benno Randolfi (1934-2012). Market scene at a city gate. Oil on canvas. Framed size: 96x72 cm. Unframed: 56x80 cm. The painting is in very good condition. The frame shows signs of aging and minor wear.
Benno Randolfi was a contemporary Dutch painter known for his atmospheric, light-responsive paintings. In his work the interplay of sunlight and shadow plays a central role, as he brings everyday scenes to life with a loose, impressionistic brushwork. His paintings breathe warmth and calm and often evoke the feeling of sun-drenched places in Southern Europe and North Africa. Randolfi drew inspiration from daily life in these regions: street scenes, markets and village views recur as a theme. A distinctive feature is that he allowed human presence, but did not place the individual portrait at the center. Figures become part of the whole, giving rise to a timeless and universal mood. With his handling of paint and use of color, Randolfi managed to create a strong impression of light and space. Up close, the brushstrokes are loose and sketchy, but from a distance they form a harmonious and lively image. This technique gives his work a special dynamism and makes each painting an invitation to look longer. The oeuvre of Benno Randolfi appeals to lovers of warm, Mediterranean moods and painting in which experience and atmosphere take precedence.
