Early J. Amsler polar planimeter (Type 1), circa 1855–1860, brass, serial no. 144, in good original condition with normal signs of age, supplied in its wooden box with accessories.

Very early J. Amsler planimeter – ca. 1855–1860 – serial number 144 – in original case
Offered: an exceptionally early and rare polar planimeter from Swiss engineer J. Amsler, from the early period of planimeter production (ca. 1855–1860). This specimen bears the very low serial number 144, indicating an instrument from the first generations ever produced.
The planimeter is made of brass and is in a beautiful, original condition. The instrument is supplied in the accompanying wooden storage case, including various accessories and original note cards/instructions. Such complete sets from this early period are rare and highly sought after by collectors of scientific instruments.
Planimeters were used in the 19th century to accurately determine areas on maps and technical drawings and formed an important step in the development of measuring instruments within cartography and engineering.
