AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

2 new Ethiopian opal earrings
Set in 925 sterling silver
Total weight: 0.72 g / 3.6 ct
6.2 mm x 5.0 mm x 15.0 mm
New and unused

Opals from Australia have long been known. However, in recent years they have been somewhat eclipsed by a new variety from Ethiopia: the Welo opal! This stone is translucent and stands out for its characteristic unique light reflections. It was discovered in the Semien Wollo mountain region, in northeastern Ethiopia. The exact moment of discovery is not known. Some sources date the introduction of the Welo opal to the Nairobi market in 1993. The discoverer is considered to be chemist Tilahun Yohannes, and already in 1994 the geologist Dr. N. Barot reported in an article in the ICA Gazette about this gemological novelty. Mining began slowly; in 1997 only 10 kilograms were mined. The Eyaopal jewelry workshop in Addis Ababa cut 400 grams. That same year, the Welo opal was presented at the Sainte-Marie International Mineral Fair, and a year later Eyaopal displayed 350 cut opals at the Tucson gem and mineral show. Commercial mining began in 2008. A new star among opals had been born.
