Oil on canvas painting from the 1930–1940 period in a folk religious style, depicting an interior scene with a central, lying figure surrounded by mourners, framed, 51 × 62 cm.
Description from the seller
Title: Holy Week
School: European (20th century)
Style: Religious genre painting
Technique: Oil on canvas
Interior scene of strong narrative and devotional character, set in a richly ornamented ecclesiastical space or chapel. The composition depicts a moment of recollection around a lying figure, surrounded by numerous people dressed in mourning or in prayerful poses, which reinforces the ceremonial and solemn sense of the scene. The work stands out for its architectural detail, the decorative elements in the background, and the choral arrangement of the figures, which guide the viewer’s gaze toward the center of the action.
The color palette, rich in blacks, ochres, golds, and reddish hues, helps create an atmosphere of contained drama, very much in keeping with the theme of Holy Week. The brushwork is meticulous and descriptive, with particular attention to the treatment of garments, the highlights of interior light, and the spatial depth of the depicted space. The result is a composition with a strong scenographic sense, where popular devotion, liturgical theatricality, and a taste for ambient detail are combined.
It features a large ebony wood frame with a stepped molding and a perimeter decoration of small beads and repeated geometric textures. Its dark finish enhances the solemn character of the work and harmonizes especially well with the scene’s chromatic depth.
Notes:
The work may suffer damage during transport even with proper packaging. In that case, we will require photographs of the damage to proceed with compensation. Customer satisfaction is always our priority.
Exceptionally, shipping costs may be affected by a surcharge for reasons such as being outside a continental territory, or due to excess dimensions or weight of the item. PremiArt will in no case cover this surcharge.
Due to problems at the Switzerland border we are obliged to inform that shipments with a length or height exceeding 1 meter to that destination will not be carried out.
