A 17-piece collection of straw marquetry boxes dating from the late 18th to the 19th century, in antique style and good used condition with minor age-related wear.
Description from the seller
Important collection of straw marquetry boxes – 18th and 19th centuries
Set of 17 collectible pieces in straw marquetry from the late 18th and 19th centuries. One of them is likely more recent. This ensemble illustrates the virtuosity of this 'poor art' that became aristocratic, often attributed to so-called 'convict labor' or to the cabinetmakers of the Napoleonic III era.
Each piece features very fine decorative work, created from dyed rye straw fibers, offering silky, shifting reflections.
Collection details:
• Forms: Remarkable sabot-shaped case with floral decoration, nestling circular boxes, and cylindrical needle cases.
• Pocket accessories: Cigar holder, ticket/paper cases, and card holder with complex geometric decorations (chevrons, diamonds, and seed motifs).
• Central case: Large rectangular box with a flat lid, adorned with Hungarian-point marquetry.
• Iconography: Presence of floral motifs (roses, pansies), stylized architectural landscapes, and geometric compositions in visual relief.
State of conservation:
Good overall condition for this fragile organic material. The patina of time is superb, preserving beautiful contrasts between natural, green, and purplish tones. (Some minor losses or localized wear from use, not affecting the structure).
All noticeable flaws have been photographed.
