Mediterranean Breath (Mediterranean Breath)

Original XL painting, work from the series “Architectural Memories.”

In this work, the series moves toward the coasts of eastern Sicily; architecture becomes a magical filter between the interior and the infinity of the sea. The painting is a homage to the island’s light and to the force of the elements that define its landscape.

A series of white arches, symbolizing the purity of Mediterranean lime, rise above a staircase that invites ascent. In the center, a vertical opening plunges directly into the blue of the sea and sky, creating a vanishing point that allows the gaze to “breathe” the horizon.
The dark gray of lava stone, which frames the arches with the severity and nobility of Etna’s basalt, anchors the work in the unique geology of eastern Sicily.
The different shades of blue and cobalt, representing the pulsating heart of the Mediterranean, through the architectural openings, boldly enter the inhabited space.

"Respiro Mediterraneo" is not only a representation of a place, but a state of mind: the sensation of sea air breeze slipping through ancient stones, the moment when architecture stops being closure and becomes a bridge to infinity.

Painted by hand with acrylic on canvas with overall dimensions 110x70 cm; the painted surface measures 100x60 cm, approximately 5 cm of white margin around the canvas have been left, 100% cotton with medium grain, final protective varnish.

The work is a unique piece hand-signed with an included certificate of authenticity; it is not a print.

Carmelo Manuel Tosto | Architect and Artist

Born in Catania, Italy in 1990, I have outlined my creative path between the rigor of design and the freedom of vision. My training, developed between the Istituto Statale d’Arte di Catania and the Faculty of Architecture of Bologna, with crucial experiences in Ankara and Milan, has allowed me to develop a language where the built environment becomes emotion.

My artistic research elects architecture not as a simple subject, but as the structure of thought. In my work, the constructive elements shed their practical function to become symbolic archetypes:

The Staircase - Represents the dynamism of becoming. It is an invitation to movement, an element that connects physical and metaphysical planes, guiding the observer toward new spaces of awareness or places of elsewhere.

The Opening (The Gate) - A threshold between the known and the unknown. Architecturally it enables connection between environments; emotionally it transports toward states of mind of those who observe them. Behind every opening, the spectator is invited to project what resides in their own subconscious, always seeking the “beyond” of the visible, turning the act of looking into a personal discovery.

The Arch - An architectural element par excellence, it embodies resilience and balance. Its ability to resist being crushed by weights, yet discharge them harmoniously, translates into a curved, soft line that welcomes and reassures, offering a stability that is both structural and spiritual.

In this constant dialogue between archetypes, matter, and light, every painting is born as a "sensitive place." The painted gesture meets projective rigor to create depth not only visual but perceptual, inviting the viewer to inhabit the space of the canvas and discover a part of themselves within it.
