Description from the seller

Very impressive oak cabinet, dating from the 19th century, possibly with older elements or based on earlier (17th-century) examples.

Magnificent and exceptionally rich and entirely hand-carved panel work.
The cabinet is built from twelve unique figurative panels, which is rarely found in this level of completeness and variation.

The cabinet is made of solid oak and constructed using traditional techniques (mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-cut and hand-planed wood). The construction is demountable, with the different parts provided with hand-engraved assembly numbers, visible on several elements and typical of the original assembly.

A particularly special and rare detail is the presence of a hand-engraved name, “Louis Detivelle,” visible on the piece. This inscription contributes to the piece's unique and historical character and may refer to an earlier owner, maker, or workshop.

The engraved name ‘Louis Detivelle’ may indicate French origin or influence, which adds to the historical and characterful whole.

The doors and panels are very uniquely richly adorned with deep relief work, including medallions with busts, bird motifs, and elegantly worked scroll and foliage patterns. The variation and liveliness in the carving clearly confirm fully manual craftsmanship.

All panels are fully original and consistent in style, execution, and aging, suggesting the piece as a whole has been preserved and is not assembled from different parts.

Very exceptional and visually striking, composed of twelve individually carved panels, each featuring a unique figurative scene in the form of a bust in a medallion.

The carving is characterized by a notable variation in faces, expressions, and attributes, including headgear, helmets, and hairstyles, indicating a deliberate iconographic structure. The panels are framed by elaborately worked ornamentation with laurel wreaths, floral motifs, and mythical animals, including dolphin-like figures and a prominent bird in the upper register.

The composition seems to reference an allegorical depiction of man in different life stages and social roles, from youth and beauty to power, wisdom, and mortality. This narrative structure, combined with the fact that each panel is unique, makes this furniture piece particularly distinctive within its type.

The piece shows a beautiful, natural patina that has developed over the centuries. Inside, clear signs of age are visible, such as wear and historical woodworm traces (not active), consistent with its age. The cabinet was locally reinforced in the past, as is common with furniture of this age, without compromising its character or appearance. The construction remains sturdy and functional.

Equipped with old ironwork, including original hinges, key, and lock.

An exceptionally decorative and collectible piece of furniture that is very interesting both aesthetically and historically.

A piece so richly and storytelling developed rarely comes to market and stands out as a remarkable collectible within the category of early European furniture.

Shipments to islands or outside Europe on request.

The cabinet will be completely dismantled for shipment. Everything will be securely packed and protected for delivery.
